Your Free Limited Edition Mug
Every year hundreds of first-years huddle together with the Student Alumni Committee (SAC) to enjoy a gourmet cup of hot chocolate and celebrate your alumnihood. That’s right! Once you’ve gotten through your first quarter as a UChicago student, you’re welcome into the alumni neighborhood! Every January, we take pictures against a UChicago backdrop, chat about our favorite parts of the week’s concurrent Kuvia event, and receive a free class mug. The event, called Hot Chocolate Night, will take on a new look new this year.
For the first time ever, we’ve partnered with UChicago Alumni and the Senior Class Gift (SCG) Committee to enlist the help of a talented student artist to design a mug as a free gift to the first 200 first year students to sign up!
Meet Rena, Your Mug Designer
Rena Schwartz is a Class of 2024 student who enjoys de-stressing through “pretty much every kind of art.” Her design of a Phoenix rising like steam from a mug captures the spirit of warmth and community among first years who are experiencing the UChicago tradition of Hot Chocolate Night differently than any previous classes. Rena will be putting her mug to use by “the closest fireplace” and the hot cocoa will be “filled with marshmallows.”
Hot Chocolate Night 2021 Is Open to the UChicago Community
January is Arts Month.
In keeping with our sister organization, Senior Class Gift’s Themed Month of Giving, we also invite all students and alumni to participate in Hot Chocolate Night by giving a gift of $20.21 to any fund that supports UChicago Arts. To say thanks, we’ll send you a mug designed by ashanti, a fourth-year trans-disciplinary artist whose abstract design captures the UChicago architecture and our community’s sense of belonging (see below).
From your performing art RSO and the Department of Visual Arts to community UChicago Arts programs like Amplify to ArtsPass, you have a plethora of was to support student access to arts (from K to College). If you’re looking for recommendations, check out a post from our sister organization Senior Class Gift called January Is For The Arts.
